In the past 18 years, Locust Grove Enterprises has served numerous clients in a variety of capacities. From producing business cards to developing large-scale travel guides with printings of 100,000-plus copies, Locust Grove has performed myriad assignments for a diverse list of clients.
On the marketing end of the business, the company has promoted many of successful ventures — including the Belleayre Music Festival in Highmount (ongoing for the past seven years), the Pakatakan Farmers’ Market in Halcottsville (since its inception 13 years ago) and the two original Tastes and Sounds of the Catskills festivals sponsored by the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development.
Brian Sweeney, president, is a native of Arkville and has been a professional writer for more than 25 years. His creative work has won a number of prizes, including two first-place awards from the New York Press Association for “humorous columns.” Mr. Sweeney had written “Here’s The Scoop,” a column dedicated to the lighter side of life, for more than two decades in the weekly Catskill Mountain News.
Mr. Sweeney started his writing career at the Margaretville, NY-based Catskill Mountain News in 1981, shortly after graduating from Siena College in Loudonville with a bachelor of arts degree in English. He began his career as a reporter but was named editor the following year until leaving the paper in 1988 to establish Locust Grove Enterprises.
It was Mr. Sweeney’s observation over the years about the lack work by many businesses to properly promote themselves that led to this decision. It was his desire to fill this need.
Locust Grove has worked cooperatively for more than decade with Silvertop Graphics, a New Kingston-based graphic arts agency, to provide a successful balance of creativity and production.
The company also has developed a strong network of locally-based associates who provide special project assistance, including market research, data entry and bulk mail production.
“Locust Grove”... All In The Family Naturally, there were many important considerations when the business was being established in 1988.
Along with all of the countless details involved in setting up the company was the task of selecting an appropriate name. Many names were considered, but discarded for various reasons.
It was important that the name felt right, but strong consideration was given to coming up with a name with ties to my beloved Catskill Mountains. After weeks of tossing out potential names, a family member suggested using Locust Grove in the title.
To some folks this name conjures up the Samuel Morse estate in the Hudson Valley. To me, Locust Grove means the large boarding house outside of Arkville that my grandparents operated during the summers in the late 1940s and into the mid-1950s.
Like so many tourist facilities of its kind, the Locust Grove House eventually became too costly to maintain and was closed. The building was torn down in the late 1960s but the property on which it sat remains in the family today. Although it’s a different type of establishment, Locust Grove Enterprises is still in the business of serving customers. Locust Grove Enteprises is located on the second floor of the Arkville Post Office building at
43400 State Highway 28, Arkville, NY. Office hours are: Wednesday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and by appointment. |
